Upcycled Retro Sideboard

An absolutely stunning unique – and very chic sideboard. Hand-painted retro design featuring Orla Kiely style decoupage…

I just love it…such a unique and individual look!

This was an original Schreiber 1960′s to 70′s solid wood and veneered dressing table. Which has now been utterly transformed into a glamorous retro sideboard. I actually spent quite a long time researching key retro looks to produce the wonderful combination of colours it now sports. Following my initial preparation work, I gave it 2 coats of primer, I then hand-painted it to a very high standard of finish using superior eco-friendly eggshell paints.

  • On the outside of the unit I have used a mixture of Farrow & Ball ‘Pavillion Gray’ and ‘James White’. The overall look is a very pale grey. This was given 4 coats, and then finished off using clear wax for a beautiful smooth and resilient finish.
  • The top 2 drawers were painted again in eggshell paint using a lush yellow/slightly mustard colour. This was followed by a clear wax finish.
  • The retro decoupage given to the bottom drawers is simply stunning! It has been given several coats of satin lacquer to protect the surface, and ensure an easy clean finish.
  • The retro decorative plate used on my photographs has been handcrafted using an exciting new technique called Decopatch. I used the same retro design as on the drawers. I have done a tutorial on the Decopatch project here.

 Here’s the Decopatch Decorative Plate…

For me this is my most impressive upcycled project to date, with the possible exception of our TV cabinet which also went through an extreme transformation.

As always, thanks for visiting :) If you’ve enjoyed this post please leave a comment – feedback is always welcome.

See you next time…
